Spotlight on Talent: Natasha Steane
Natasha Steane
Level 3 Hospitality
“I was aware of Walsall College’s outstanding reputation, but when I enrolled on the course I was amazed by the catering facilities here and how passionate and knowledgeable the staff are about the industry.”
It was our industry contacts in the hospitality sector that attracted Natasha to Walsall College, now she’s working for one of them as a Pastry Commis Chef at Opus restaurant in Birmingham (Michelin recommended and owner of 2 AA rosettes.)
“I was aware of Walsall College’s outstanding reputation but when I enrolled on the course I was amazed by the catering facilities here and how passionate and knowledgeable the staff are about the industry.
“My tutors always encouraged me to develop my own creativity and explore new dishes and trends. As part of the course I took part in master classes with top chefs from local restaurants and also completed a work experience placement with a cake boutique. This gave me the chance to develop my skills in a real work setting, which helped when I applied for the role at OPUS, who the college also had good links with.
“I now work under a pastry chef preparing a range of different desserts on the restaurant’s menu. It can be a very busy and challenging working environment at times, but it’s one that any chef thrives on.”
