Spotlight on Talent: Liam Fletcher
Liam Fletcher
Studied HNC/D Hospitality Management
It was Liam’s childhood dream to combine his two loves of cooking and travelling. Now he’s living this dream working as a chef with the Royal Navy, an achievement he’s very proud of.
“After successfully completing my Level 3 in Professional Cookery here, I applied and was accepted on to the HNC Hospitality Management course.
“This involved more theory work than the Level 3, but I learnt a lot about the different aspects of the hospitality and catering industry. Every time I passed an exam I gained more confidence, which drove me on further to reach my goals.
“The lecturers were very professional and their own experience in the world of catering and hospitality was inspiring to me as a young chef.
“The course set me up with the skills and experience I needed to succeed in the catering industry. I learnt how to work as a team, be organised, be a leader and most importantly, I learnt to have confidence in myself. It also gave me managerial skills and put me ahead for promotions.
“Before I joined the Royal Navy I worked in various catering establishments including restaurants, pubs, bakeries as high as a head chef. In my current role I enjoy the fact that I’m cooking for over 250 military personnel three times a day as well as taking part in various naval activities. I also get to travel the world and see different countries and cultures. Walsall College really set the foundation for me to work upon and achieve these goals.”
