Spotlight on Talent: Charlotte Booth
“Studying at Walsall College definitely gave me a head-start in my career. Learning the basics of the industry from such enthusiastic and experienced staff on a vocational course was so much more beneficial than the A-levels that I had previously taken elsewhere.”

Studied National Certificate in Construction – now working for Jessup Build Develop as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor
“I had always wanted to go into construction and be part of creating new buildings. During my studies at college and with the help of my tutor who had contacts in the industry, I managed to secure a permanent position with Jessup Developments as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor.
I have been working with Jessup for three and a half years and I’m thoroughly enjoying my position, now as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor. The work is varied and interesting, with my time in the office complemented by site visits for meetings and to check on progress.
Successfully achieving a BTEC qualification at college also helped me to get on to a university course and I am currently studying part-time for a degree in Quantity Surveying at Birmingham City University, alongside working full-time.
Studying at Walsall College definitely gave me a head-start in my career. Learning the basics of the industry from such enthusiastic and experienced staff on a vocational course was so much more beneficial than the A-levels that I had previously taken elsewhere. I would definitely encourage students interested in construction to take the course I did, as it gives you a good foundation for higher level courses in the various disciplines involved in construction.
The course also made me aware of the full range of career opportunities within the construction industry. I am now using the skills I have gained on my course in the workplace and I love it. It’s great to enjoy the job you’re doing and be happy to be at work. The course has helped me loads; everything I do at work relates to what I have learned on the course.”
