Spotlight on Talent: Amy Davis

Studied : Level 3 Childcare
Progression : Nursery Nurse at Tots Care Nursery
Amy had a life-long dream of teaching children. With a desire to give them the best start in life, Amy enrolled onto a Childcare course. After a successful one-week placement with Tots Care, she was offered a full-time position as a nursery nurse.
Amy’s dreams began when she was in primary school.
“I chose to do childcare because even since I was in primary school, I wanted to become a teacher. When I grew up, I realised how important it is for children to have the best start in life, so my aspirations changed to becoming a nursery teacher.”
In her final year at school, Amy attended one of the College’s Open Days to speak to one of the Childcare tutors.
“I wanted to ensure that Childcare was what I wanted to do. The tutors were very supportive and gave me a clear idea of what working in childcare would be like. I was more certain about my chosen career path, and then I began on a Level 3 Childcare course.”
Amy developed industry-standard skilled through the wide range of activities, including a one-week placement at Tots Care play group.
“I enjoyed learning lots of new skills and having the one-to-one support, as it helped me get through the course.
Going out on placement allowed me to work practically. I had the opportunity to apply my skills and work with real children, rather than dolls and imaginary ones!”
The team at Tots Care welcomed me in, even though I had low confidence at the start of the course. I was nervous to start, as it was something I’ve never done before. But in no time, I came out my shell.”
During her placement, Amy was given more responsibility and was offered a job at the end of it.
“The best part about being at my placement was when I become a key worker, as I was given more responsibility.
When I finished my course, my placement offered me a job, which I was really happy about because I have loved being there for the past 2 years.
My career aims for the future is to carry on working at Tots Care and next year, if I want to go further, I’ll go to university.
Before I started the course I was very unsure if I wanted to do childcare or health and social. But from talking to tutors and completing the course, it’s made me be sure that I want to work with children and families.”
