Tanya had plans to go to university. But that changed when she undertook an industry placement at Holiday Inn, as part of her Business Administration course. She is now a General Service Assistant at the hotel.
Tanya had a natural interest in business, and enrolled into a business and accounting course to launch a career in finance.
“I’m really interested in businesses – how they work, how they run and how they make money. Whilst on the business and accounting course, I carried out some work experience at a company in an admin role.
I enjoyed the placement so much, I decided to enrol onto an administration and business course, as I still had one year left of education.”
As part of her course, Tanya was required to undertake an industry placement.
“My sister’s boyfriend works in a hotel, and he said he really enjoys his job. So I thought I’d give it a try through my work placement.
I decided to find my own placement and Googled a few hotels in Walsall. I emailed Holiday Inn and received an email back to say they were happy to take me on.”
Tanya impressed the general managers at Holiday Inn, and once she finished her course, she was offered a job.
“My role as a General Service Assistant has a lot of responsibility, compared to my work placement. I check the money in the tills, and produce reports on who is in-house and who is not. I also collect deposits when people make a reservation at the hotel.
I love everything about my job! I’m a people person so I enjoy meeting new people and building relationships.”
Tanya plans to work her way up and gain a position in finance.
“My ideal role would be to process the hotel’s invoices. This course at Walsall College has given me access to work experience that every employer is looking for."
I feel that on-the-job experience has enabled me to develop my skills and knowledge much faster. I have further developed my interpersonal skills when dealing with customers and other members of staff, which has been invaluable.
But most importantly, I have found an organisation I want to build a career with.”
Andrea Gubbins, General Manager at Holiday Inn Express Walsall, said: “Tanya has stood out as a hardworking and proactive student, who is keen to learn and grow from her experiences.
