Due to personal circumstances, Laura was unable to finish her studies after leaving secondary school. But an Access to Higher Education course changed everything. Laura was able to gain the UCAS points she needed to get into university to realise her dream of becoming a teacher.
Laura’s Access course allowed her to study a wide range of subjects, which helped her to explore different career paths that require a degree. It was then that she discovered a passion for teaching.
“I undertook an Access to Higher Education: Teaching Pathway course, as I wanted a career in teaching. The course was extremely useful. I’ve learned valuable skills to complete a degree, such as referencing, time management, research and how to write essays to a high standard.”
Upon completing her Access course, Laura had gained the entry requirements she needed to study for a degree a Wolverhampton University, which led to a full-time teaching role at her former school.
“After completing my degree, I began a PGCE (PCET) teaching qualification at Birmingham City University.
We were required to complete a teaching placement throughout the year. I sought a place at ACE Academy, as I had been a student there myself. In 2013, I returned to the academy after receiving my teaching qualification and have been teaching there full-time ever since.”
Last year – after four years of teaching – Laura become Head of Sociology at the school.
“When I began teaching, I was asked to take on some Sociology classes, as I had completed modules in the subject during my degree. The position of Head of Sociology became vacant last year. I applied and was fortunate enough to be awarded the post.”
Walsall College’s Access course has changed Laura’s life for the better, proving that university is attainable regardless of your circumstances.
“The course helped me to realise my life-long career goal. It also taught me that it is never too late to get back into education, it made me love learning again and helped me to discover my passion for History.”
