Yewtree Pharmacy have injected some new talent into its workforce by hiring an apprentice through Walsall College.
Ella Crowther, who is undertaking a Level 2 apprenticeship in pharmacy, applied for the post after a relative showed her the vacancy.
“I enjoy learning about the new drugs and what medication is used to treat each illness. I also enjoy the dispensing side of my job, which involves the preparing, labelling, recording and transferring of a prescription drug to a patient. It’s very hands on and busy.”
As part of her course, Ella receives one-to-one support from her assessor, who ensures she is developing the skills she needs to build a successful career in pharmacy.
“If I need any support from the college, it is readily available. My assessor is extremely supportive and helpful. It is nice that there is a middle person outside of the working environment who I can speak to regarding both work and college.”
Ella now plans to continue her studies. “In the future, I would like to complete a pharmacy technician course, and then go forward to an ATC course in the same field."
Apart from giving Ella her first step into the world of work, her apprenticeship has also helped her pick a career she enjoys and has boosted her ambitions.
“My apprenticeship has helped me to understand the difference between school and work. It has confirmed that I do want to work in pharmacy and progress with further qualifications.”
Leah Downing, Pharmacy Manager at Yewtree Pharmacy, said: “Ella has shown herself to be a real asset to the team. We were impressed with her communication skills, and her ability to build good relationships with patients and her colleagues.
She recognises our customers when they walk through the door, which is essential as we pride ourselves in providing a personal service. Ella always asks questions, which shows her commitment to her learning and development.
Apprenticeships are a great way for people – both young and older – to gain the skills they need whilst getting paid. It also enables learners to know if they will enjoy their chosen career, and if it is something they will want to commit to in the long-term.”
Walsall College offer a number of apprenticeships in a wide range of subjects including pharmacy, customer service and dental nursing. To find out more, come to our next Open Day to speak to a tutor.
