Learning Support

Additional Support Needs
We believe everybody should be allowed to learn and maximise their potential, regardless of their learning needs. We welcome applications from people with additional learning needs and endeavour to provide appropriate support, following individual assessments of personal needs. If you require any further information or support, please contact our Inclusive Support Manager.

Provision for Deaf Learners
The Deaf Academy has a reputation for providing a high level of support to a large number of D/deaf/deafblind learners in a number of ways. Deaf and deafblind learners on a main programme will be supported by BSL and deafblind interpreters all qualified to a minimum of Level 3 and when necessary a qualified note taker will also be provided. For deaf learners who do not use BSL a note taker is provided at all times.

All D/deaf/deafblind learners also receive one-to-one language support for up to 2
hours per week.

There is also a team of deaf and hearing specialist lecturers who teach basic skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT and we also now teach Citizenship Studies.

The Deaf Academy has a learner area where learners can meet up during break times and can seek support from Deaf Academy staff if needed. The Deaf Academy team also provide Deaf Awareness Training for hearing staff and learners across the College.

Visual Impairment Support Service
Learners who have a visual impairment can be supported in a variety of ways that best
suits their individual needs. Course materials are adapted into the learner’s preferred medium, for example, large print or Braille. The College has, in a number of IT classrooms, installed assistive software such as JAWS and Supernova. In addition to this the College has a room designated for visually impaired learners where they can be taught the necessary skills to access main programmes. This can include touch typing and using assistive technology. Where necessary, learners can receive one-to-one support with guiding and orientation from specialist support staff. Some learners may also be entitled to receive additional one-to-one study support.
