Students Revved Up for Contest

Four talented Walsall College Motor Vehicle students have been selected to compete in the regional heats of the WorldSkills UK mechanic of the year competition.

The level 3 students, Nathan Westwood, Paul Morris, Andrew Watts and Rob Smith will be representing Walsall College at the regional heats of the national competition, to be held on 23rd March at South Nottingham College.

WorldSkills UK are quality assured skills competitions. Run annually, the competitions aim to encourage people across the UK to excel in their vocational skill. WorldSkills UK competitions run both regionally and nationally and aim to help lift standards of training and performance, promoting world class skills and international competitiveness.

The top six scoring mechanics from the heats will then be invited to attend the BMW academy on 22nd and 23rd June 2010, with the winner being crowned Skillauto Light Vehicle Technician of the Year 2010. Outstanding WorldSkills UK National Finalists may even be considered for potential inclusion in a shortlist for the team that goes on to represent the UK at a wider WorldSkills Competition.

Dominic Whelan, Curriculum Manager for Motor Vehicle at Walsall College said, “Having four of our students selected to take part in the regional heats of a national competition is a huge achievement. These students have been with the College for 3-4 years and we are all very proud of their success. They are all keen and capable young mechanics, who I have no doubt, will represent the College with honour.”

Motor Vehicle student, Nathan Westwood said, “The competition will be a great opportunity to widen my skills and experiences; I’m going to give it everything I’ve got!”
