Students Promote Respect

Walsall College students will be promoting respect on 26 – 30th April during their Respect Week. The week is being held by the College’s Students’ Union to get students involved in spreading the respect message and reaffirming their promises made in their respect agreements.

During the week, a selection of students will undergo training activities to become Respect Champions and will use their training to promote the message of respect to fellow students.

Activities taking place to promote the message will include Kic FM visiting the College to record sound bytes on their definition of what respect is and why they think it is important, along with visitors from Walsall Council’s Walsall Safer Partnership coming in to speak to students about safety. Students will also be creating respect postcards and handing out information on the importance of having respect for themselves, one another and their environment.

Respect is a key focus at Walsall College and when students enrol, they all sign a respect agreement, outlining the key characteristics and behaviours that must be adhered to as ambassadors of the College. Once signed up, both students and staff are then expected to display their commitment to the College’s zero tolerance approach to misconduct and disrespectful behaviour through out the year.

The Respect Agreement consists of a range of elements, including: respecting others, keeping safe, keeping the College environment clean and green, having respect for the property of others and wearing their learner passes with pride.

Construction student Gary Wilkinson said, “The Respect Week is a great way for us to raise awareness of the Respect Campaign within the College and ensure the issues within the Respect Agreement are at forefront of everybody’s mind. I chose to become a Respect Champion as it is an issue I feel extremely passionate about. It’s really important that we all have respect for each other, ourselves and our surroundings to create the best possible learning environment”.
