Students Create Olympic Designs
Walsall College Product Design students have been taking part in a challenge of Olympic proportions, after being tasked to design door furniture in an Olympic themed competition.
The project has been run in conjunction with the UK’s leading architectural ironmonger in the supply of products for commercial and public buildings, Allgood.
Students were given the brief to design a range of Olympic themed architectural furniture, designing and producing specialist door furniture of the highest quality. This involved students researching existing products and then developing inspirational new designs that reflect the spirit of the Olympics.
Students then had to communicate their design ideas by using a variety of 2D drafting media, before producing the final designs in 2D and 3D CAD (Computer Aided Design). They also had to create a series of prototype models to bring their ideas to life.
On Thursday 18th March, Bill Chaggar, Product and Development Manager for Allgood and Alan Field, Marketing Manager for Allgood visited Walsall College to announce 19 year old Lucas Gough as the overall winner of the competition, and present him with an iPod nano for his excellent work.
The winning design took inspiration from the fluidity associated with the aquatic events at the Olympic games. It also utilised an interchangeable centre piece that can incorporate the different colours of the Olympic logo.
Walsall College Tutor, Alex Reynolds, said: “The opportunity for the learners to undertake real life briefs is essential to the success of the product design programme. It is with support from companies like Allgood that we are able to give learners exposure to a commercial design experience, a challenge they have risen to with flair and originality”.
Alan Field, Marketing Manager for Allgood said, “Allgood took great pleasure in being involved in the competition and we were taken aback by the quality of work produced by the students. It is always nice to give something back to the local community and support budding talent at Walsall College”.
