Students Compete in World Skills!

Two Walsall College Hair Apprentices, Sophie Denton and Chelsie Stanaway recently represented Walsall College in the regional heats of this year’s World Skills competition, held at Sutton Coldfield College on 11th May.

World Skills UK is a portfolio of 70 skills competitions designed by leading industry experts and training providers aimed at students, trainees and employees. The winners of the regional heats will then be invited to take part in the UK final on the 12th June at L’Oreal Hammersmith in London.

The competition comprised of two tasks relating to both women’s and men’s hairdressing, offering scope for students to display creativity, as well as technique and good working practice. Each task was carried out on official mannequin heads and was an opportunity for our students to show off the skills they have gained on their courses. The students are now waiting to find out if they have been selected to compete in the next level of the competition.

Walsall College Hair Apprentice, Chelsie Stanaway, who works at Niche Hair Design in Willenhall said, “The competition was really exciting and gives you an insight into the high standard you’re up against in the industry. It will definitely give me the confidence to put myself forward for more competitions in the future”.

Fellow Apprentice Sophie Denton who works at Vogue Hair and Beauty in Great Wyrley added, “I enjoyed working under the pressure of the competition – it was also interesting to see other people’s work and their creations”.

Walsall College Hairdressing Assessor Ruth Jones commented, “Entering competitions is a great way for students to develop their talent for hairdressing further and push their skills to the next level. The students really enjoyed the competition and are looking forward to find out if they will have the opportunity to participate in the national final”.
