Revved Up for Action
Budding Mechanics at Walsall College recently got all revved up and ready for action for a motor vehicle competition designed to test their skills.
Earlier in the week a representative from Bridgestone UK Ltd and former student, Paul Turner came into the College and gave a presentation to the students to give them advice on elements of the challenge. He also attended on the day of the challenge to support the students and present them with prizes.
60 Level 2 Motor Vehicle students competed in a week of heats and the finalist of each heat then went head to head in the overall final, which took place in Walsall College’s motor vehicle workshops on Friday 24th April.
During the competition, students were set a range of timed tasks to test their mechanical skills and proficiency, including raising a vehicle safely from the ground, choosing appropriate tools to remove the tyres and servicing the tyres.
The overall winner was Paul Morris (19), who was awarded the title ‘Level 2 Technician of the Year’, as well as a trophy and a range of industry related prizes provided by Bridgestone Tyres and J&L industrial supplies, in conjunction with Teng Tools.
Walsall College Motor Vehicle Tutor Dominic Whelan said, “Competitions like this one are a fantastic opportunity for students to demonstrate the skills they have developed on their courses and have the added bonus of one of them being able to stand proud amongst their peers as the overall winner”.
Paul Turner from Bridgestone UK Ltd added, “My advice to the students is to just stick at it and work as hard as they can to get the skills and qualifications that will give them the edge when looking for employment in the industry”.
