Official Launch for 101 Project

Councillor Tom Ansell attended Walsall College’s Wisemore Campus on Thursday 11th March to officially launch the College’s 101 project.

101 is a sponsorship based project involving 6 outstanding Walsall College students. Despite physical and learning disabilities, these young people will each undertake 101 challenges, ranging from pressing a button to cross the road to making a cup of tea, things most of us take for granted.

During the launch event, Councillor Tom Ansell and a range of guests were treated to cakes prepared by the students, just one of their 101 tasks. Future Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Gary Clarke, has also committed to support the project during his year of office.

101 is one of the flagship projects supported by Amarjit Basi, Principal and Chief Executive of Walsall College, Deborah Tovey, Inclusive Support Manager at the College, College Governors, Judith Ashley and Madeleine Holland and Ashley Lovell, President of the College’s Students’ Union and Student Governor.

Sponsorship can be as little as £1 for one student to complete a single challenge, rising to supporting all the students for every challenge. It is hoped that not only individuals, but schools, local businesses, emergency services, PCT, local government and community groups will come forward and offer their support.

101 project leader Deborah Tovey has worked in the education sector for 17 years and has been Inclusive Support Manager at Walsall College for 5 years, supporting students in all areas of the College. Deborah commented, “I am delighted the 101 project has gathered so much support. All sponsorship money raised from the project will be invested in the very latest specialist equipment to enhance the students’ learning experience, including specialist shake resistant cameras and video equipment. The 101 project will provide students with an opportunity to progress their skills and achievements, whilst raising money for new specialist equipment which will enrich their studies even further”.

Posters are available to publicise the project, along with a 101 badge, designed by Daniel Clarkson, one of the 6 students. A small party at the completion of the project had been envisaged, but interest from sports clubs, celebrities and VIPs means the small tea party could turn into ‘a bit of a do!’
