Jo Snips to Success
A Walsall college Hair Student was recently presented with a top Francesco Group award for winning first prize in the Level 3 Hairdressing College Competition.
Jo Nandra snipped her way to success in the contest where students from a range of colleges had to compete to produce an Avante Garde look and present it in a 10 × 8 photograph.
The hairdressing hopefuls had to give their model a haircut, colour and finish, complemented with an overall polished look for the photograph.
The competition was extremely fierce as all colleges working in partnership with Francesco Group could enter, but in the end, Jo impressed the judges with her professional entry to claim the top prize.
Originally from Thailand, Jo Nandra (33) moved to England over 20 years ago and has been living in Walsall for the past 5 years with her husband and 2 children. After completing NVQ Level 2 and 3 in Hairdressing, Jo is now undertaking a Foundation Degree in Salon Management, as well as an additional Enterprise qualification.
Jo commented, “I’m really pleased and excited to have won. When I got the brief, I went through it in detail and made sure I looked into everything, including the make-up, outfit and lighting. It was a lot of hard work but I loved doing it so I didn’t mind!”
She added, “I had been in retail all my life but had always loved hair, so decided to go for it one day and enrol on a course. The courses have opened so many doors for me and I’ve gained the skills and knowledge that will last a lifetime. I’m living proof that Walsall College brings talent to life.
“After completing the Foundation Degree, I plan top up to a BA Hons Degree at university and eventually want to run my own salon. My advice to anybody thinking about returning to college would be to go for it – if you don’t do it, you’re only going to be wondering, ‘What if?’ and if I can do it with 2 kids, anybody can!”
