Deaf Base Staff Win Top Award
Staff and students in Walsall College’s Deaf Base have been celebrating after winning the prestigious Sensory Impairment Award at the third annual Walsall Disability Awards.
Hosted by the Walsall Disability Forum and sponsored by Walsall College, the event was held at Walsall Town Hall on Wednesday 1st April to acknowledge organisations, groups and individuals within the borough who have worked in partnership with the local authority and voluntary sector to deliver a project or service that has benefited people with disabilities.
Walsall College Travel & Tourism students also got involved in the event, by volunteering to help out with a range of tasks on the night, including showing guests to their tables, working in the cloak room, ushering award winners to the stage, operating the disabled access lift and supporting the visually impaired guest of honour.
Walsall College’s Deaf Base Team provide outstanding curriculum and support for D/deaf/Deafblind learners. The service of the Deaf Base ensures that these learners can access educational opportunities and are supported by Note Takers and highly qualified Interpreters in their preferred language (e.g. BSL, SSE, Visual Frame, Hands On, Deafblind Manual Alphabet etc.). There is also a team of D/deaf and hearing specialist lecturers who deliver Literacy and Numeracy qualifications to support the learners to progress onto higher level courses or into employment.
Head of School Rachel Pearce explains, “I am incredibly proud that the Deaf Base won this award. It recognises the hard work and commitment of all the team who always strive to deliver an outstanding service to our learners. It is the perfect way to mark the 15th Anniversary of the Deaf Base and certainly gives us cause to celebrate.”
Principal and Chief Executive of Walsall College Amarjit Basi said, “It was an honour to sponsor the Walsall Disability Awards as they are a great way of highlighting the fantastic work that is being carried out throughout the year in the local area to enrich the lives of people with disabilities.
We are all thrilled that our Deaf Base Team has won the Sensory Impairment Award – the team work extremely hard to support and develop the skills of Deaf learners. We are also very proud of our Travel & Tourism students and Interpreters, who did a superb job on the night and were a credit to Walsall CollegeĀ.
