College Commemorates Local Author

Walsall College will be commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of a famous Walsall born author, Jerome K Jerome, by naming the restaurant in its new £64 million Wisemore Campus, Jerome’s.

The College’s brand new in-house Silver Service training restaurant is not only set to provide customers with stylish surroundings, impressive food and affordable prices, but will also help preserve Walsall’s heritage by commemorating one of its literary heroes.

Jerome Klapka Jerome, best known as the author of ‘Three Men in a Boat’, one of the great comic masterpieces of the English language, was born in Walsall on 2nd May 1859, the youngest of four children. His first book ‘On the Stage and Off’ was published in 1885 and this was followed by numerous plays, books and magazine articles. In 1927, one year after writing his autobiography ‘My life and Times’, he was made a Freeman of the Borough of Walsall. He died later the same year and is buried in Ewelme in Oxfordshire.

Amarjit Basi, Principal and Chief Executive of Walsall College commented, “We are delighted to be working with the Jerome K Jerome Society to commemorate the life and works of Jerome and preserve some of Walsall’s heritage in our new Wisemore Campus. Jerome’s restaurant will provide an excellent platform for students to gain the skills and experience to launch their careers in the Hospitality and Catering industry”.

Tony Gray of the Jerome K Jerome Society said, “We are extremely pleased Walsall College have decided to name their new restaurant after Jerome. Tourists come from all over the world visiting his birthplace so it is fantastic that his profile is being raised amongst local people as well. We are desperate to keep Jerome’s name alive here and strongly believe the people of Walsall should be proud and inspired by what he achieved in his lifetime”.
