World Culture Week
This week (6-10 February) students at Walsall College have been taking part in ‘World Culture Week’; an annual celebration of the global mix of students that attend the College.
World Culture Week is a chance for students from diverse backgrounds to come together and learn about important issues such as cultural issues, citizenship, human rights, disability awareness, and religion and belief. It also provides an opportunity to increase awareness of the local, national and international organisations that are working with specific groups and cultures.
During the week, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students hosted a range of activities including sari dressing and headscarf tying lessons as well as games, music and food from around the world. Local Latin dance instructor, Leanne Chrisostomou got students on their feet and moving to salsa and zumba beats, while Creative Industries students installed a large scale 3D collage to represent cultural dances from around the world.
Seminars throughout the week explored vital issues from around the world, as representatives from various organisations including Samaritans Purse, Christian Aid, SOS Children’s Villages and Sickle Cell Care visited the College to give presentations on the work they do.
Student Services Information Advice and Guidance Officer, Andy Clark commented, “World Culture Week at Walsall College is a great way of highlighting important issues from around the world and providing students with a chance to learn more. It is also an opportunity for students to expand their cultural horizons and take part in fun activities alongside their usual college week”.
