Students work with Alsop to create a box of delights
A collaboration between Interior Design students at Walsall College and world renowned architect and Stirling prize winner, Will Alsop, has led to an exciting new exhibition launching on Friday 27th January at The Public in West Bromwich.
‘A box of delights’, which forms part of The Public’s forthcoming Art of Architecture programme, has also seen Alsop work with architecture students from Birmingham City University and Sheffield Hallam University, to create an environment designed to make us think about how architecture makes us feel.
The thought provoking exhibition reflects the art centre’s diverse nature and includes a large scale 3D installation, which will reside in the upper gallery during the show.
Linda Saunders, Managing Director of The Public said: “The exhibition was created following several discussions and workshops with students and was a unique opportunity for them to work with a highly celebrated architect.
“Providing opportunities for community wide engagement is one of The Public’s greatest strengths and we would therefore be delighted to work with students from across the region again in the future.”
Renowned for his highly colourful, eye-catching buildings, Alsop, who in fact designed The Public, has been awarded an OBE for his acclaimed work and elected to the Royal Academy of Arts.
Since opening in 2008, the building has received over 350,000 visitors who have enjoyed the diverse exhibitions and events programme. Listed in the book ’1001 Buildings To See Before You Die’, the multi-purpose building is a vibrant and inspiring work of art in its own right and fast becoming an icon of the Black Country.
‘Will Alsop A box of delights’ will be at The Public from 27 January to 20 May 2012. The gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10am 5pm, Sunday, 11am 3pm. Admission is free.
