Students Go Green for Sustainability
This week, Walsall College students have been playing their part in raising awareness of environmental issues, by participating in the College’s Sustainability Week (7-11th February). The aim of the week was to raise people’s awareness of environmental issues and how we can all contribute to helping the planet
All week, students have been learning about sustainability and the environment, before passing the information they have learned on to others through a variety of means, including the use of four learning packages, SharePoint and facebook.
Information has also been available to students in the form of activity stands and stalls in the atrium of Wisemore Campus. Here, students have been encouraged to expand their knowledge in four key topic areas – Water, Waste, Energy and Climate Change.
Joining the College throughout the week have been local retailers and organisations, including ASDA, Sainsbury’s, The Body Shop, Skanska, Re-PC Ltd, TIGI, Walsall Council and Marches Energy Agency, who will be sharing with the students what they are doing as organisations to improve the environment.
Sue Reynolds said: “This has been a very exciting project and students have really got on board in finding out about the issues surrounding sustainability and what they can do to help the future health of our planet. We have also had the support from our local town retailers and organisations who contribute to helping the environment, such as Environmental Specialist Marches Energy Agency and Skanska, who recently helped to build the new Walsall Manor Hospital from sustainable products”.
During the week, a selection of students also braved the cold and windy weather to show their green credentials. Sarah Howard, Lewis Naylor and Jakub Stachula walked around the front of College, armed with litter pickers and cleared all the rubbish left behind by both students and the public.
