Students Celebrate World Culture
The 14-18th February was ‘World Culture Week’ at Walsall College; an annual celebration of the global mix of students that attend the College and an opportunity to increase awareness of the local, national and international organisations that are working with specific groups and cultures.
World Culture Week is a chance for students from diverse backgrounds to come together and learn about important issues such as cultural issues, citizenship, human rights, disability awareness, and religion and belief.
During the week, a range of exciting activities took place, including Performing Arts and Music students giving world culture themed performances in the atrium of Wisemore Campus; the Made of Music Collective performing and putting on a workshop for students with their unique brand of Dhol Drumming and Bhangra Dancing; and Steel With Strings delivering a Steelpans workshop.
Seminars were held throughout the week, exploring vital issues from around the world. Representatives from various organisations visited the College to give presentations, including Samaritans Purse, Christian Aid and Water Aid.
Students also had the opportunity to watch a range of world films and the College canteen offered culturally themed food each day.
Student Services Information Advice and Guidance Officer, Melanie Kerr commented, “World Culture Week at Walsall College is a great way of highlighting important issues from around the world and providing students with a chance to learn more. It is also an opportunity for students to expand their cultural horizons and take part in fun activities alongside their usual college week”.
