A Walsall College hairdressing student has recently snipped to success in the regional heats of a hairdressing competition, securing a place in the national final.

Lucy Gibara impressed a panel of industry experts in the Wella Professionals XPOSURE competition, held at Walsall College’s Wisemore Campus, to become one of five students from across the region that will compete in the national final in June.

Wella Xposure is the leading nationwide hairdressing competition for students. Now in its second year, it offers hairdressing students nationwide the opportunity to compete in an inter-college challenge.

Ideal for those looking to take their first step on the competition ladder, XPOSURE promises to celebrate imagination, creativity and talent amongst young hairdressers. The contest is the ideal springboard for any college student, with winners receiving great exposure within the industry.

During the competition, students were tasked with creating a total look, including a commercial cut and colour, make up and clothes styling. They were then given an hour to style and finish the hair before being judged.

Top prizes will include £1,000 of Wella Professionals training vouchers, a £500 tool kit, a chance to work with a top hairdresser for the day and educational support for a year.

Francesco Group’s Director of Hairdressing, Anya Dellicompagni is fronting the campaign, and commented: “I am thrilled to be a part of this fantastic campaign. I believe that encouraging young people to showcase their skills at this age will ultimately help instil the passion and motivation which they will need to reach their full potential in the competitive hairdressing industry”.

Lucy commented: “The Wella Xposure competition was a challenging but thoroughly enjoyable experience and I am ecstatic to have been put forward to the final in London. I look forward to using my skills acquired from Francesco Group, Streetly and more recently from Walsall College”

Paula Seeley, Hairdressing Lecturer for Walsall College, said: “We were delighted to host the regional heat of the Wella XPOSURE competition at our state of the art Wisemore Campus and thrilled to have had one of our students selected for the national final. Being one of five students from across the region to be selected for the final is a fantastic achievement and we wish Lucy the best of luck for June. Taking part in competitions is a great way for students to test their skills against their peers, pushing their creativity and talents to the next level”.
