An exceptional Walsall College Business student is celebrating after making it to the final three of a national competition.

Katie Farman, aged 20, has been shortlisted for the final in the Outstanding Business and Enterprise category of the National BTEC Awards 2012, for her excellent performance on her BTEC Extended Diploma in Business Management course.

Katie is a dedicated student who has received distinctions on all her assignments throughout the course, along with winning a Walsall College Adult Learner of the Year Award at a recent award ceremony, hosted by Director of Wildlife at West Midlands Safari Park, Bob Lawrence.

Now in their second year, the National BTEC Awards recognise vocational excellence and are designed to reward outstanding individuals and centres for their achievements.

Katie, who will be progressing to a university degree after completing her course, commented: “It’s a real honour to have made it this far in the National BTEC Awards. I’m really proud of what I have achieved and it just goes to show that if you put in the work and have a passion for what you’re doing, you can achieve great things.”

Walsall College Business Lecturer, Jeremy Bridgman added: “Katie has done incredibly well to make it to the final three of a national competition, particularly as this year, the organisers of the BTEC Awards have reported an unprecedented number of entries, all of a really high standard. Katie is a fantastic student, who puts in a lot of hard work and dedication to achieve excellent results. We are all very proud of Katie and feel she would be a very worthy winner of this award.”

The final judging panel day, where the overall winners for each category will be chosen, is set to be held at the end of this month. Final judging panellists include among others, Rod Bristow, President of Pearson UK, Sandra Kelly, Learning and Development Manager at Whitbread, Euthan Newman, BTEC Tutor at South Thames College (and last year’s Outstanding BTEC Tutor of the Year), Nick Linford, Managing Editor of FE Week and Stephen Exley, Reporter Times Educational Supplement.

The overall winner of each Award category will then be invited to the National BTEC Awards Ceremony and Parliamentary Reception in London on Thursday 5th July, where they will receive their National BTEC Awards 2012 prizes.
