A Walsall College Foundation Art and Design student has recently created a brand new corporate logo for a local roofing company, Stephens Roofing Limited as part of an Innovation Experience Project.

Stephens Roofing Limited contacted the College to ask if students would be able to help them improve their corporate identity. This became an Innovation Experience Project, where Foundation Art & Design student, Harriet McDevitt-Smith was selected to help the company by creating a new logo for them.

As part of the project, Harriett presented a range of ideas, from which Stephens Roofing chose one. Harriet then developed this into the final logo, whilst also creating an advert for an awards publication.

Two of the Directors of Stephens Roofing recently visited the College to present Harriet with a pen set and £500 to say thank you for the hard work and effort she has invested in their company.

The Innovation Experience is funded through the Working Neighbourhoods Fund by Walsall Council, to help and support local businesses innovate and young people to access unique work placement opportunities.

It aims to bring students and employers together from across the Borough to enhance skills development and organisational effectiveness. Students aged 17-24 are given the opportunity to develop a solution to a specific challenge or issue that a company faces, which will ultimately help the organisation grow.

Dave Stephens, Director of Stephens Roofing Limited commented: “The logo Harriett has designed for us is fantastic! It’s good to work with students and give them the opportunity to use their skills in the real world. She put a lot of hard work into the project and the outcome was brilliant”.

Harriett said: “It’s been nice to do something different and try a new challenge. It was good working for a real employer and getting real feedback on your work. The project has helped me increase in confidence and I am now sure of my own capabilities”.

Sue Krejzl, Foundation Art & Design Lecturer at Walsall College added: “We are all very proud of Harriett. She gets full credit for the graphic design work she has produced, alongside some very intense course work. We wish her all the success as she goes forward to study a degree in Fine Arts”.
