A previously unemployed Walsall Business graduate has now landed his dream job as a Business Operations Executive, after participating in the Young People In-Company Innovation programme co-ordinated by Walsall College.

George Clarke-Smith, a former Walsall College and University of Wolverhampton student, was initially selected to work on a voluntary basis for ten weeks at J&J Engineering in Walsall to complete a research project. The company, who have been manufacturing quality metal pressings and welded assemblies for over 30 years, participated in the programme in order to help them develop ideas for new markets and products.

Since the successful completion of the project and the development of two new product ideas, George has now been offered a full time job with the company as a Business Operations Executive.

The Young People In-Company Innovation Programme is funded through the Working Neighbourhoods Fund by Walsall Council, to help and support local businesses innovate and young people to access unique work placement opportunities.

It aims to bring young people and employers together from across the Borough to enhance skills development and organisational effectiveness. Young people aged 17-24 are given the opportunity to develop a solution to a specific challenge or issue that a company faces, which will ultimately help the organisation innovate and grow.

George commented: “After graduating from university, there were limited options for jobs and I couldn’t get into the area I had qualified in. I had always done either manual work as a labourer or bar work until I took part in the Young People In-Company Innovation Programme. The project has been really interesting and it’s got me where I want to be. I’m pleased that the steps I have taken have paid off and I am now doing the job I’ve always wanted”.

Jonathan Woodall, Director of J&J Engineering said: “During the project George showed he was forward thinking and had the vision, initiative and knowledge to make a real difference to the company. We are delighted with the work George has undertaken so far and look forward to him developing his ideas further as he begins his new role. The Young People In-Company Innovation Programme has allowed us to begin to look into new areas and take innovative approach to the future of our business”.
