Walsall College will be holding a series of careers evenings throughout November to help prospective students currently considering their options, find the right career path to suit them.

The first careers event is taking place on Monday 12th November, from 6.30-7.30pm at the college’s Wisemore Campus, and will focus on how to get into the health and social care industry.

This event will be followed by evenings focusing on careers in the childcare industry at Wisemore Campus and the electrical and plumbing sectors at Green Lane Campus, both on Monday 19th November. Later in the month, Wisemore Campus will host an event on how to land Sport and Travel related jobs on Monday 26th November.

The evenings will feature talks from leading industry figures who will also be on hand to answer questions from students. To gain a real insight into the industry, students will have opportunities to try have-a-go activities in their chosen area.

Research carried out by the Association of Colleges (AoC) reveals that eight of ten school teachers agree that it’s important for young people to hear directly from employers about jobs and careers, to help change their perceptions and inspire them to consider options they may not have thought of. With youth employment currently at record levels, employer engagement in education is more crucial than ever, yet only 49% of pupils have the opportunity to talk to employers about jobs before they leave school.

Director of Student Journey at Walsall College, June Morrow said: “With the cutback of independent careers advisors in schools, students now have even less information to help them with the important decisions they have to make once they finish their GCSEs.

“These free events are a fantastic opportunity and have been designed to help prospective students interested in enrolling on a course, find out which careers it could lead to, so they can make more informed decisions. Students and parents can gain a first-hand understanding about an industry and the career opportunities available from an expert in the field, before making the decision if its the right route for them.”

The events are primarily aimed at pupils in Year 9 to 11 considering their post GCSE options, but anyone looking for a change in careers and parents are also welcome to attend.

The college will also be holding a series of events for careers in sectors including science, ICT, creative arts, business, hospitality, public services, beauty, hairdressing and automotive, on Monday evenings from 6.30-7.30pm between November and February.
