Walsall College Creative Arts students are currently staging a spectacular Winter Festival in The Venue.

The Winter Festival is an exciting collaboration between performing arts and music teams, offering an eclectic mix of live music, dance and theatre.

The festival includes ‘Keep It Local’, a musical evening staged by Performing Arts students, singing a range of songs from Midlands based performers, including Beverley Knight, Dexy’s Midnight Runners and Slade.

Music students have been presenting ‘The Winter Sessions’, a selection of live pop, rock and soul covers. Dance students have been hosting ‘The Dance Collective’, an evening of outstanding choreography, including Sleeping Beauty, ballet, high energy jazz and contemporary pieces.

Performing Arts students have also been showing off their acting skills by putting on a performance of Ted Hughes’ adaptation of Seneca’s Oedipus, the Greek legend of the tormented King of Thebes who, unknowingly, kills his father and weds his mother.

Creative Arts Lecturer, Julie Wright said: “This is the first Winter Festival Walsall College has held and we are delighted with the quality and range of the work students have produced. Not only is the festival a chance for family, friends and members of the public to see the students perform, the performances will also form part of their assessments. The festival is a fantastic combination of drama, dance and music and we are hoping to stage more of these events in the future, including a Spring Festival”.

The Creative Arts Winter Festival is running from 29th November – 9th December 2010. For tickets, please call into the Box Office in the College’s Salon, 12 – 2pm each day or phone 01922 657063.
