College Hosts WorldSkills UK Competitions
On Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th June, Walsall College’s Green Lane Campus hosted prestigious WorldSkills UK competitions.
The College hosted three events under the Skill M&E banner – the Midlands’ regional heat for SkillPLUMB and SkillELECTRIC, and the UK semi-final of SkillFRIDGE.
During the two days, Walsall College also held a trade event at the Green Lane Campus, where partner employers and organisations including Draper Tools, Homeserve and the National Apprenticeship Service could speak to students about their products and services.
Walsall College students Corbin Peniket and Ben Hughes competed in the Skill Electric and Skill Plumb competitions respectively, testing their skills against their peers in the regional heats.
Part of WorldSkills UK, the Skill M&E competitions, organised by SummitSkills, provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate the technical skills required to be a successful modern day plumber, electrician or refrigeration and air conditioning engineer.
Competitors undertook a series of practical tests based on real life work, which demonstrated their abilities and highlight their outstanding skills in their industry.
Curriculum Manager for Construction, Andy Lees commented: “It was a real honour for the College to be hosting such prestigious World Skills UK competitions and shows the high standard of the facilities we have here. Walsall College always encourages students to take part in national competitions, in order to test themselves against their peers and push their skills further”.
