Chinese New Year Celebrated
Students and staff from SLDD recently held their annual Chinese New Year party to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit.
Art and Design students worked collaboratively with the Food Studies group, who shopped for and cooked food for the party.
The Chinese Lunar New Year is the longest chronological record in history, dating from 2600BC, when the Emperor Huang Ti introduced the first cycle of the zodiac.
Like the Western calendar, The Chinese Lunar Calendar is a yearly one, with the start of the lunar year being based on the cycles of the moon. The beginning of the Chinese year can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February.
Jennie Jones, SLDD Lecturer said: “Course Leader, Katie Fieldhouse said the students really enjoyed planning and preparing food from a different culture. Chinese tea was available to taste, along with a range of classic Chinese dishes.
“During the day, Art and Design students took the opportunity to display the creative artwork they have produced so far on their course. Their completed Chinese themed artwork will be on show at the Leather Museum exhibition from 11th May 2011.”
