Apprenticeships allow you to earn while you learn and gain qualifications as you work. As employees, apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. Off the job, usually on a day-release basis, apprentices receive training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications.

Acceptance onto the programme will be based on interview, initial assessment results and GCSE grades at C and above would be ideal but not compulsory. Employment within the sector you wish to undertake the apprenticeship is necessary before you start on the Apprenticeship programme. The latest apprenticeship vacancies are shown on the right of this page.

There are three levels of Apprenticeship available:

Intermediate Level Apprenticeships

  • An Intermediate Level course which means you’ll work towards a National Vocational Qualification Level 2 (NVQ) in your chosen specialist area
  • You’ll also gain Functional Skills qualifications which teach you valuable skills such as Maths, English and in some frameworks, ICT
  • You’ll also learn about Employment Rights and Responsibilities and Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
  • The amount of time it should take to complete the training depends on the industry you choose to work in
  • To start this programme, you should ideally have five GCSEs (grade C or above) or have completed an Intermediate Level Apprenticeship

If you successfully complete an Intermediate Apprenticeship you can apply to progress on to an Advanced Apprenticeship

Advanced Level Apprenticeships

  • An Advanced Level course which means you’ll work towards a National Vocational Qualification Level 3 (NVQ) in your chosen specialist area
  • You’ll continue to advance your training in Functional Skills
  • The amount of time it should take to complete the training depends on the industry you choose to work in

Higher Apprenticeships

  • Higher Apprenticeships work towards work-based learning qualifications such as NVQ Level 4 and, in some cases, a knowledge-based qualification such as a Foundation degree.
